California is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the nation. Yet in recent years, the state has seen a troubling trend: many military retirees are choosing to leave California after their service and build their next chapter elsewhere.

The VetFund Foundation is pleased to announce that Julian Cañete has stepped into the role of Chair, following his tenure on the Board, most recently serving as Vice Chair.

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 694 (Archuleta) into law, marking a major milestone in California’s efforts to protect veterans and their families from predatory practices and to reinforce the state’s leadership in veteran services.

On one end, there are credentialed advocates who walk veterans through the process with integrity and training. On the other, there are unaccredited consultants who charge steep fees, make big promises, and operate without oversight. Some have even required veterans to hand over login credentials, a practice as unethical as it is illegal.

After years of tireless advocacy, California’s veteran and military community is celebrating a long-overdue and well-deserved win: the Governor and Legislature have enacted a state income tax exemption for military retirement pay.
