Governor Newsom Signs SB 694, Strengthening Protections for California Veterans

Sacramento, CA — Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 694 (Archuleta) into law, marking a major milestone in California’s efforts to protect veterans and their families from predatory practices and to reinforce the state’s leadership in veteran services.

After a lengthy and hard-fought legislative process, the bill establishes clear protections against unaccredited, for-profit companies that exploit veterans seeking assistance with their earned benefits. SB 694 requires federal accreditation to represent or advise veterans on benefits claims, prohibits unauthorized fees, and strengthens privacy and security protections.

The bill signing took place at CalVet headquarters and was joined by CalVet Secretary Lindsey Sin, Senator Bob Archuleta, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, Attorney General Rob Bonta, VFW California Commander David Kuta, county veteran service officers, and a broad coalition of veteran service organizations and advocates.

“California will not tolerate claim sharks that target and exploit our veterans and their families,” said CalVet Secretary Lindsey Sin. “Every veteran has the right to access their benefits for free with VA-accredited organizations and VA-accredited attorneys.”

Governor Newsom acknowledged the difficult path to passage, stating, “This was not an easy process. I’m grateful for your fortitude… I’m proud that it happened in California.”

SB 694 also provides relief for veterans currently trapped in predatory contracts, voiding agreements with unaccredited claims companies beginning January 1, 2027.

VetFund applauds the Governor, legislative leaders, and the coalition of veterans organizations who worked together to overcome significant opposition and misinformation surrounding this issue. This bill reinforces California’s role as a national leader in protecting veterans and ensuring they receive the benefits they have earned through service.

VetFund looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Legislature, state agencies, and partner organizations on future proposals to ensure California remains the number one state in the nation for serving veterans and military families.
